SCADA & Deluge System Installation at LPG Bank – Metso Outotec, Alwar (Rajasthan)

Background

Metso Outotec India Pvt. Ltd., a leading player in sustainable technology and engineering solutions, operates an LPG bank at its Alwar manufacturing facility to support various industrial processes. Given the critical nature of LPG storage and handling, safety and automation were top priorities. The client sought a reliable partner to integrate advanced fire safety systems and real-time monitoring to meet both operational needs and stringent safety regulations.

Agnim Engineerz, known for its expertise in fire protection systems and industrial automation, was engaged to execute the project from supply to commissioning

Challenges Identified

  1. Hazardous Area Safety Compliance:LPG is highly flammable, requiring systems to meet NFPA/Indian standards for hazardous zones.
  2. Integration of SCADA with Fire Protection:Ensuring seamless communication between safety devices and the control interface.
  3. On-site Space & Layout Constraints:Installation within an operational LPG bank without disrupting ongoing plant activities.
  4. Time-Sensitive Delivery:Completion was required within a limited downtime window to avoid production losses.

Solutions Implemented by Agnim Engineerz

  1. SCADA System for LPG Bank
    1. Design & Supply:A customized SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system designed for hazardous area applications.
    2. Features Integrated:
      1. Real-time monitoring of pressure, temperature, and gas leak detectors.
      2. Alarm & alert integration for operator response.
      3. Historical data logging for compliance and analysis.
    3. Control Room Interface:User-friendly HMI screens developed for quick response and decision-making.

  2. Deluge System Installation
    1. Fire Protection Strategy:A water-based deluge system designed as per NFPA 15 & OISD guidelines to provide immediate cooling and fire suppression in case of LPG leak ignition.
    2. System Components Supplied & Installed:
      1. Deluge valves with UV detection mechanism.
      2. Dedicated hydrant lines with isolation and control valves.
      3. Water spray nozzles strategically positioned to cover LPG bullet surfaces.
    3. Testing & Commissioning:Hydrostatic pressure tests, functional tests, and simulated fire drills conducted to validate system performance.

Project Execution Highlights

  1. Collaborative Approach:Worked closely with the Metso Outotec safety team for hazard identification and mitigation planning.
  2. Zero Accident Record:All work carried out under strict HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) guidelines.
  3. Timely Delivery:Project completed within the stipulated schedule, ensuring minimum plant downtime.

Results Achieved

  1. Enhanced Operational Safety:LPG bank now has an automated fire protection mechanism with remote monitoring.
  2. Regulatory Compliance:System meets all applicable Indian Standards, NFPA guidelines, and OISD requirements.
  3. Improved Response Time:Integrated alarms and automated deluge activation significantly reduce the response time during emergencies.
  4. Operator Confidence:SCADA visualization has improved situational awareness for plant operators.
