Revamping the Fire Pump Room at Whirlpool of India Ltd. (20 Years Old) as per NFPA Standards

Whirlpool of India Ltd. is a leading manufacturer of home appliances and a subsidiary of the Whirlpool

Corporation. The company operates several large-scale production plants in India, including the site in

question, which had a 20-year-old fire pump room that no longer met the safety and operational

standards required by modern codes.

Objective

To revamp the fire pump room from scratch to achieve full compliance with the latest NFPA 20 (2022)

and NFPA 25 standards, ensuring robust fire protection for the critical manufacturing operations of

Whirlpool’s plant.

Existing system audit and gap assessment

Complete redesign and engineering of the fire pump room

Demolition and removal of outdated components

Installation of a new pump system and control panels

Commissioning, testing, and handover

Civil Construction of Fire Pump Room

A multidisciplinary team visited the site to assess the condition of the fire pump room.


Outdated electrical systems and corroded pipelines

No pressure sensing line or test header

Non-functional diesel & electrical pumps

No automatic sequencing or pressure-based starting

Major non-conformities to NFPA 20 and local fire norms

Civil & Utility Readiness

Cutting of roof for Pumps entry and exits & installation of Canopy

Removal of the existing foundation and pump base

Construction of a new plinth with vibration pads

Ventilation openings and diesel exhaust pipeline route modification

Cable trays and fire-resistant conduit laid for power and control wiring

Supply & Installation

Supplied pumps and control panels

Fabricated MSCL piping with hot-dip galvanizing

Installed pressure sensing lines (as per NFPA 20, Section 4.20)

Mounted diesel pump with exhaust silencers and fuel tank

Terminated all wiring and tested auto/manual start controls

Installed differential pressure gauges and NRVs

Testing & Commissioning

Hydrostatic pressure testing of piping at 1.5 times rated pressure

Pump performance testing

Diesel pump start with simulated power loss

Jockey pump cycling test based on pressure drop

Flow test via flow meter to verify rated discharge

Verification of alarm signals and panel logic

Calibration report for flow meter
