A correct Fire System Installation is as important as designing standard system. A system should perform in the way it is supposed to be when any emergency happens.

Deluge System
Deluge system are recommended to install in hazardous areas such as power plants, chemical plants and aircraft hangers. Design and installation of deluge system shall be in accordance with IS 15325. Deluge system provide fast response and covers entire area rather that activation of sprinklers at particular location. Automatic actuation is achieved by operation of automatic detecting equipment installed along with water spray nozzles. Deluge system can be divided into two categories medium velocity and high velocity systems. Deluge system have pressured water line at the inlet of the deluge valve and dry sprinkler line at the outlet. Deluge system can have water or foam as quenching medium. Open nozzles can create water curtain that prevent fire spread. This total flood method douses a fire before it has the chance to grow uncontrollably.
Deluge system can detect fire in various ways such as electrical actuation, pneumatic actuation and hydraulic actuations Deluge valve operation is through a diaphragm which control the flow of water from inlet to the outlet of the deluge valve. Movement of diaphragm in deluge valve is controlled by pressure in the priming chamber and pressure in the priming chamber is control through detection lines QBD, solenoid valve in case of electrical actuation.
Components Of A Deluge System Are
High velocity water spray systems are installed to extinguish fires involving liquids with flash points of 65°C (150°F) or higher. Three principles of extinguishment are employed in the system, namely, emulsification, cooling and smothering. The result of applying these principles is to extinguish the fire within a few seconds. Equipment like Transformers, oil filled equipment of power stations, Turbo-alternators and Oil-fired boiler rooms and oil quenching tanks are generally extinguished with the help of High Velocity Water Spray System.
For control mode, water shall be applied at a rate of not less than 10.2 lpm/m² of the surface area of the entire transformer including the bottom surface, radiators, conservators, etc.
Nozzles are generally used for spray angles between 65° and 150°. They are recommended for usage in applications with different K-factors between 18 and 110. These nozzles are generally used for oil filled equipment like transformers and other types of oil tanks.
Automatic detection equipment shall be so located and adjusted as to operate reliably. The location of detectors shall be based on several factors, such as nature of hazard, air velocity, temperature variations, etc. For transformers the detectors shall be as close to the shell as possible at all places subject to electrical clearance
Applications Of Deluge Systems
1. Burning Control:
2. Exposure Protection:
So, industries have to adopt to cleaner fuels and PNG, these fuels are less polluting however risk associated with them are much higher especially due to fire. Deluge systems are best solution for industries dealing with highly flammable fuels for their day-to-day operations.
Installation & Service Of Deluge Systems
Installation of the deluge systems shall be performed by fire protection professionals who have expertise in this subject and prior experience of installation of these systems. Fire system design and installation must be done with proper understanding of building codes, NFPA standards and Indian standards. After, installation of a deluge system, industries need to keep it running smoothly by getting it serviced regularly. Industries shall perform inspections to make sure that the deluge valves are working properly and check to make sure there is no corrosion within system’s pipes. Deluge system shall be in the proper condition, especially in high hazard areas where fires can become really dangerous.
Fireman had its experience of deluge system installation from many projects completed by its team. We are fire installation professionals which design and installation exposure and experience.
Components Of A Deluge System Are
- Class C Iron pipe
- Deluge valve
- Solenoid valve (electrical actuation)
- Detectors
Benefits
- Distribution of concentrated fire loads to reduce fire load density.
- Fire rating requirements for compartmentation to prevent spread of fire during the entire duration of a fire incident.
- Gives insight for the substitution of combustible materials with materials whose calorific values are less. For example, corrugated plastics boxes and polyurethanes pallets can be replaced with carton corrugated boxes and wooden pallets.
- Helpful in determining the K-factor for the sprinkler system and evaluation of exiting sprinkler system as per the occupancy and storage.
- Essential document for fire system design report preparation.
